About this book

Language: French

Aimed at visitors and inhabitants of the Crau, the area in France where the rivers Rhône and Durance come together, this book is the result of a long-standing passion of the author for this territory which is unique in its steppe landscape and its biodiversity.

Located in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, the Crau forms a triangle of 600 km2 between Arles, Salon-de-Provence and the Gulf of Fos, formed on the fossil delta of the Durance. The Crau, occupied by a sub-desert steppe, called "cushoul", is home to an original vegetation and many animal species, some of which are particularly rare: an endemic locust species, Prionotropis rhodanica, the iconic pin-tailed sandgrouse, the splendid ocellated lizard or even the Lycosa tarantula, the largest of France's spiders.

Illustrated with beautiful photographs as well as pastel and watercolour drawings by the author, the book offers an exhaustive picture of the Crau: from its geological formation to the presentation of its ecological riches, and its history which is closely related to grazing sheep. The book will also address current threats to the preservation of this unique ecosystem and the management measures put in place to protect it.
