The abundance and diversity of ammonites from the Upper Toarcian and Lower Aalenian in numerous deposits in Western Europe have enabled the in-depth study of two subfamilies: the Dumortieriinae and the Leioceratinae. The almost imperceptible transition from one to the other allows them to be grouped in the same family, that of the Graphoceratidae, a family which therefore brings together, alongside the Hammatoceratidae, almost all of the ammonites from the terminal Toarcian (Pseudoradiosa and Aalensis zones)  and the Aalenian.

This study also attempted to present the numerous species created in each genus, gathered in groups sharing both common morphological characters and the same stratigraphic position. Paleogeographically, it appears that this group of ammonites is mainly confined to the NW European province and much less represented in the Mediterranean province, otherwise on its margins (Hungary, North Africa, etc.).

The systematic position of this group, however, remains debated: the genus Tmetoceras is placed according to the authors, either in a subfamily of the Tmetoceratinae, attached to the Graphoceratidae, which is the option retained in this work, or in an independent family of Graphoceratidae which can also include the genus Catulloceras from which the genus Tmetoceras derives, or even the genus Dumortieria.

This work completes the series of books already published on the ammonite fauna of the Toarcian and Lower Aalenian. It follows the work on the Hildoceratidae, the Hammatocertidae, the Dactylioceratidae, the Phymatoceratidae, the Grammoceratidae, the Phylloceratidae and the Lytoceratidae.

L’abondance et la diversité des ammonites du Toarcien supérieur et de l’Aalénien inférieur dans de nombreux gisements de l’Europe occidentale ont permis l’étude approfondie de deux sous-familles : les Dumortieriinae et les Leioceratinae. Le passage presque insensible de l’une à l’autre autorise à les regrouper dans une même famille, celle des Graphoceratidae, famille qui rassemble donc, aux côtés des Hammatoceratidae, la quasi totalité des ammonites du Toarcien terminal (zones à Pseudoradiosa et à Aalensis) et de l’Aalénien.

Cette étude a également tenté de présenter les nombreuses espèces créées dans chaque genre, rassemblées dans des groupes partageant à la fois des caractères morphologiques communs et une même position stratigraphique. Sur le plan paléogéographique, il apparaît que cet ensemble d’ammonites est surtout inféodé à la province NW européenne et bien moins représenté dans la province méditerranéenne, sinon sur ses marges (Hongrie, Afrique du Nord…).

La position systématique d’un groupe reste cependant discutée : il s’agit du genre Tmetoceras, rangé suivant les auteurs, soit dans une sous-famille des Tmetoceratinae, rattachée aux Graphoceratidae, ce qui est l’option retenue dans ce travail, soit dans une famille indépendante des Graphoceratidae pouvant inclure également le genre Catulloceras dont dérive le genre Tmetoceras, voire même le genre Dumortieria.

Le présent ouvrage vient compléter la série des livres déjà parus sur la faune d’ammonites du Toarcien et de l’Aalénien inférieur. Il succède donc aux travaux sur les Hildoceratidae, les Hammatocertidae, les Dactylioceratidae, les Phymatoceratidae, les Grammoceratidae, les Phylloceratidae et les Lytoceratidae.
