About this book

From the preface:

"This book contains ten chapters about the orchid diversity of the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, their morphological description, habitat distribution, cultivation methods, micro-propagation procedures, breeding techniques, traditional uses and taxonomic classification. This book may provide useful knowledge to researchers, orchid enthusiasts, farmers and entrepreneurs.

The first edition of this book was authored by Dr S.N. Hegde (the then scientist, SFRI, Itanagar) and published by the Forest Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh in 1984 to create awareness about orchid conservation and to promote orchid cultivation. Taking advances of the last 33 years, the revised second edition treats 550 orchid species (including varieties) belonging to 132 genera. All synonyms are replaced in the revised edition with their 'Names in Current Use'. Morphological description, flowering season and cultivation medium of 169 rare, endangered and commercially important orchids are enumerated along with 106 colour photographs. With an aim to form a base for the orchid industry and for further research in orchidology in Arunachal Pradesh four new chapters are added in the revised edition, while other chapters are thoroughly revised."
