About this book

The first illustrated account of the ferns of the West Himalayas was published in two volumes over 20 years ago and is now out of print. Moreover, fern taxonomy has undergone many changes which has necessitated its revision. The present account (in six volumes) is profusely illustrated with line diagrams and colour photographs. It is based on personal collections made by the author during the last sixty years of fern hunting in various parts of the West Himalayas. Information about those that could not be personally collected, has been forthcoming from colleagues.

The present flora is presented in six volumes. Volume 1 contains the introduction and 16 family accounts, covering Ophioglossaceae, Marattiaceae, Osmundaceae, Plagiogyriaceae, Cyatheaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Lygodiaceae, Marsileaceae, Azollaceae, Salviniaceae, Parkeriaceae, Hymenophyllaceae, Lindsaeaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Actiniopteridaceae, and Vittariaceae. Volume 2 treats the four families Pteridaceae, Cheilantheaceae, Cryptogrammaceae, and Adiantaceae; volume 3, Aspleniaceae and Thelypteridaceae; volume 4, Athyriaceae, Woodsiaceae, Onocleaceae, Blechnaceae, Peranemataceae, and Hypodematiaceae; volume 5, Dryopteridaceae and Tectariaceae; and volume 6, Bolbitidaceae, Elaphoglossaceae, Nephrolepidaceae, Oleandraceae, Davalliaceae, Grammitidaceae, Loxogrammaceae, and Polypodiaceae, and concludes with the bibliography.

Detailed descriptions, information about specimens illustrated and details about habitat and distribution in the West Himalayas, the rest of India, and Asia are provided for the around 400 species, subspecies and hybrids.
