About this book

Language: English

In his classic papers of 1920a and 1922, C. Tate Regan provided the first, and to date the only critical analysis of all African cichlid genera. Later the same year Regan (1920b) produced a seven page revision of Tylochromis in which he provided somewhat extended generic definition, and added six species to the genus. Regan's entire 1920b study was based upon on only 23 specimens and within the limits imposed by the paucity of material available his revision provides an insightful and valuable baseline. However, as additional material has become available Regan's characters have proven less than adequate to allocate new specimens unambiguously to species. Since Regan's time large holdings of Tylochromis have become available for study, and a body of data on the distribution, trophic biology and ecology of many of these fishes is now accumulated in the literature. A taxonomic re-examination of this genus is by now long overdue and is given in A Taxonomic Revision of the African Genus Tylochromis ( Labroidei, Cichlidae ) with Notes on the Anatomy and Relationships of the Group.
