About this product

The Avani Trawl Net is designed for offshore microplastics sampling. The vertical orientation of the aperture of the net ensures that samples are collected from the top few centimetres of the water’s surface in slight to moderate swell conditions.

The body of the net is constructed in 2mm thick aluminium plate and is braced with an aluminium flat bar. The aperture is positioned vertically and divided so that 1/3 of the aperture sits below the water level and 2/3 above. The structure is fully welded. The net is supported by an inner frame constructed from marine grade 5mm stainless steel round bar which provides further support to the frame. The net is constructed with a strong nylon collar with additional reinforcement along the length of the net. A detachable filter bag at the cod end (narrow end) of the net collects the sample and is easily unscrewed for rinsing and sample retrieval.

The net is towed using two stainless steel cables that are shackled to the frame and come together in a coupling ring for the attachment of your own tow rope or cable. It is suitable for use in wave heights of between 1m - 2m with an optimal wave height of 1.2m. The recommended towing speed is 4 - 8 knots, however this should be adjusted to suit the wave height.

All of our plankton nets are manufactured onsite at our workshop in Devon so if you have a specific size of net or bespoke modification in mind, please contact us (customer.services@nhbs.com) to discuss your requirements.
