In 1766, the fourteenth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière was published, the eleventh and penultimate of the series devoted to quadrupeds. Buffon and Daubenton deal with Old World monkeys, for which they propose a new classification and for which they describe several new or still poorly known species, such as the "douc" or the "talapoin". The whole is, as always, richly illustrated.
But this volume also contains two general chapters which are among the most important in Natural History: the “Nomenclature of the Apes” and “On the Degeneration of Animals”. Buffon delves into several of the capital themes that he has been developing since 1749, in particular the question of the difference between man and animal, the definition of the species, the order of the living and the aptitude of the human spirit. to know him.
