The ninth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière was published in 1761. Buffon and Daubenton continued the description of exotic quadrupeds begun in the previous volume. They treat here foreign carnivorous animals, beginning with a series of felines from Africa, Asia and America: the lion, the tiger, the panther, the jaguar, the cougar, the lynx and the caracal, which are followed by a few other species, the hyena, the civet, the zibet, the genet and the black wolf. This succession constitutes, in a way, a parallel with that of the predatory species of Europe at the beginning of the seventh volume of 1758.
But this volume must also hold the attention because of the three long chapters on the animals peculiar to the Old or the New World and those which are common to both. Occurring as a sort of vast digression on the occasion of a discussion of nomenclature and the misuse of the term "tiger", they allow Buffon a pretext to expose his "general views" on the distribution of species on the surface. of the Earth and their possible transformations according to the climates. These pages, of considerable importance in the history of the life sciences, mark a decisive stage in the development of Buffon's thought and in the complex history of the emergence of theories of evolution in the 18th century.
