About this book

Language: French

After the quadrupeds, Buffon began in 1770 the Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, which appeared in two volumes: one, in quarto format, decorated with black and white plates, extending the fifteen volumes already published; the other, in folio, accompanied by colour plates forming an exceptional iconographic corpus quantitatively and qualitatively.

Buffon called on new collaborators, including Guéneau de Montbeillard, to write certain chapters. However, it is necessary to take scrupulous care of the scientific and literary value of the text, which not only deals exhaustively and in detail with the birds known at the time, but also offers general reflections on the natural sciences.

This first volume includes birds of prey as well as flightless species, in particular the ostrich and the famous dodo.
