About this book

Language: German

The Jena zoologist Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) is one of the most important, but also one of the most controversial natural scientists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The second volume of his official correspondence is dedicated to his institutional environment. As director of the Grand Ducal Zoological Museum, he expanded the collection from 1862 onwards and established a worldwide network.

His growing reputation and tireless commitment to popularising the theory of evolution, founded by Charles Darwin, and to establishing a scientific worldview secured him astonishing financial donations, among which the Paul von Ritter Foundation for Phylogenetic Zoology, used for research trips and new research positions, stands out. As a collector of scholarship foundations, Haeckel supported young researchers who established evolutionary biology at other universities, museums, and schools. The building of the Phyletic Museum, completed in 1908 and supported by substantial donations from his followers and patrons, remains a landmark of Jena to this day. Finally, with the foundation of his “Villa Medusa”, he succeeded in establishing an institute and museum, which, as the “Ernst Haeckel House”, was to be dedicated to the history of evolutionary theory and thus also to his own work.
