About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Russian

Lake Teletskoye, the largest lake in the mountains of southern Siberia, is located in the the north-eastern part of the Republic of Altai. The catchment region of the lake borders the regions of Khakassia in the north-east, Tuva in the east and south-east, and Mongolia in the south.

Why publish a monography on Lake Teletskoye in a series that focuses principally on African geological topics? The Teletskoye basin is tectonically active, and in this respect presents common aspects with rift basins such as Baikal, and Tanganyika, Malawi. Particularly the Baikal and the Tanganyika rift basins have common characteristics. Lake Teletskoye may be considered as the early stage of a tectonic basin, that, in a later stage of evolution, may evolve in a rift basin such as Baikal and Tanganyika.

The present work is an overview of physical, geological, and geophysical characteristics of the Teletskoye basin, as well as a new bathymetric map, based on the results obtained within the frame of the scientific collaboration, combined with data collected by several Institutes in Siberia.
