About this book

Language: German

Biological control of the inland floodwater mosquito (Aedes vexans) has been taking place in the Upper Rhine area in Germany since the early 1980s. In the course of research on the indirect effects of control, six frog species (Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo, Hyla arborea, Rana arvalis, R. dalmatina and R. temporaria) and one species complex (Rana kl. esculenta) were examined. The main question was to what extent amphibians represent a natural alternative to reducing mosquitos; in addition, it should be clarified whether mosquito control has a negative effect on the diet of the frogs.

The prey spectrum of each examined species is studied from different angles (phenology, age groups, temporal and spatial variability, size ratios of the prey, etc.). Information on the niche and the amount of food complete the species-related findings.
