About this book

Language: German

Apart from the lesser spotted eagle, only two predatory birds of our forests brood in midsummer: the honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), which is a specialized wasps hunter, and the Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo). The late breeding season also has trophic causes for F. subbuteo, because at that time there is a rich supply of fledglings and flying insects such as dragonflies, hymenopters and beetles.

Previously, this small falcon has been considered a highly specialized hunter of swallows and larks. Recent studies, however, show that the hobby does not only brood in the vicinity of larger cities, but also directly in the urban area. Especially in the outskirts the hobbies hunt successfully for sparrows, greenfinches, swifts, and even escaped budgerigars.

This volume evaluates the results of many years of observations on hobbies in Berlin and Brandenburg. Many issues such as philopatry, sex ratio, European migration routes and their risks could be investigated.

With the smallest satellite transmitter produced to date (weighing only 5 g), completely new insights into African migration routes and wintering areas could be obtained since 2008, which are presented in this revised 5th edition.

Today, the population of the hobby in Central Europe is threatened, and so this monograph provides knowledge which is fundamental for an effective protection of this species.

- Prof. Dr. Bernd-Ulrich Meyburg in: Vogelwarte 49(3), 2011

"This monograph is much more than 'just' a presentation of data from Berlin and its surroundings. In fact, it is a review of the available literature on Hobbies, tapping disparate sources from a multitude of languages [...] and obscure journals. [...] for the Hobby enthusiast, this is the book to refer to when observations need checking, be it dustbathing, the hunting of insects and bats (Chiroptera), clutch size, phenology, repeat layings, 'helpers' at the nest, roosting, telemetry, survival, artificial nests or breeding on cliffs. [...] The photographs are very much state of the art, a far cry from the dearth of material in the pre-1970s. Desmond Nethersole-Thompson, with whom Fiuczynski published a review of Hobby studies in 1980 (British Birds 73: 275-295), would have been delighted with the leaps in knowledge since then. And now even more so, since plans are well under way at Westarp Wissenschaften to publish an expanded edition of Der Baumfalke in 2013 in English."
- Rob G. Bijlsma in: Ibis (2013), 155, p. 212.

- Axel Goldau, Berlin, in: Kritische Ökologie 27(2) 2013, 30-31
