About this book

Language: German with bilingual summary in English and German

The now available second volume completes the synopsis of local chilopoda. Of all lithobiida found in Carinthia and Eastern Tyrol up to now detailled descriptions of species have been made with special consideration of structures found in the local material. Based on the investigations of Eason the reader is shown the complicated ways of historical research of Lithobiidae; correct and incorrect synonymy is presented and advice to correct studies is given through the use of many quotations.

An easy key should even enable the well-read layman to arrive precisely at correct results. Species not yet found but assumed in Carinthia are referred to both in the description of species and in the key.

Ecological and biological examination of chilopoda have undergone a considerable expansion since the publication of the first volume (Fründ 1991, Minelli 1987), autoecological depictions of here described species are nevertheless not taken into account.

In addition to the detailled chapter "Morphologie" (morphology) (Volume 1) the morphology of Lithobiidae is illustrated by schematic descriptions and special characteristics. Due to technical reasons the descriptions of species are kept short and precise, thorough analyses cannot be replaced. In the chapter "wichtige technische Hinweise“ (important technical advice) the reader not only finds an essential orientation of how to apply the study, but also practical hints concerning own studies.

A great deal of drawings refers to important characteristics and should make the differentiation of species easier. The maps of distribution in Carinthia do no outline the entire area of species, but inform about ecological peculiarities and commonness. The available study is also thought to be a help for non-specialists.
