About this book

Language: German

The Short-Eared Owl unfortunately belongs to the rare breeding birds of Germany, so that it is mostly unknown. But there are times in autumn when larger flocks come to us that stay through the winter when food supplies (mice) are ample. It is then that one has an opportunity to observe the birds in their preferred habitats.

In this way the author spent a considerable amount of time observing flocks of short-eared owls near Leipzig to get an insight into their behaviors, vocalizations and nutrition. The author links these findings with research results of other ornithologists in an appealing way, so that in the present study a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge about Asio flammeus is given. The short-eared owl is – like all owls – an avid mice catcher. Hopefully this volume will contribute to the protection of this useful nocturnal hunter.
