About this book

Language: German

2010 reprint of the third edition of this 1978 monograph.

Shortly after the discovery of America, travellers reported on the blood-sucking bats of the New World. However, until the middle of the 19th century, it was unclear which of the many neotropical bat species had this diet, which is so uncanny to humans. It was discovered that only three relatively small bat species specialise in feeding on blood.

About 50 years ago, it was discovered that these vampire bats (family Desmodontidae) pose a great threat to humans and animals as carriers of diseases, especially rabies, and systematic research into these animals began. This extreme dietary specialisation has led to the development of anatomical features in vampire bats that are not found in any other bat, and their behaviour also appears to be more complex than previously known in small bats.

This summary aims to provide an overview of the current state of research and an insight into the medical and economic importance of vampire bats.
