About this book

Language: German

The zoologist Ernst Haeckel from Jena, Germany, is one of the most important but controversial scientists of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. As an enthusiastic follower of Darwin, he worked on the continuation and popularisation of evolutionary theory and thus became a symbolic figure in the world-view battles of the time.

Haeckel's family correspondence, published for the first time in this volume, contains letters from the period from 1839 to 1854. They give an insight into the liberal protestant milieu of his parents' house, as well as his early botanical collection activity, which Haeckel already pursued on a professional level as a high school student. A special focus of the letters is the detailed information from the three Würzburg study semesters, which not only clearly illustrate Haeckel's unpopular study of medicine, but also show that the academic teachers Albert Kölliker, Franz Leydig, August Schenk and Rudolf Virchow are of special importance for Haeckel's intellectual development.
