About this book

This book contains the proceedings of the 47th University of Nottingham Feed Conference.

The Ruminant section is concerned with improving health and performance of ruminant animals. The first chapter discusses effects of negative energy balance on health and reproduction. The second reports the benefits of allocating concentrates individually to grazing cows. The third chapter discusses assessment of mineral availability. The fourth chapter describes a range of techniques for monitoring metabolic health. The fifth chapter reviews effects of essential oils on rumen fermentation.

The Microbiome section contains two chapters that review recent advances in study of the rumen microbiome, and the gut microbiome in non-ruminants.

The General section starts with a chapter on the increasing demand for food as the population increases. The second forecasts the developments in livestock production in China.

The Non-Ruminant section is concerned with nutrition of pigs and aquaculture, and future trends in the pig industry. The first chapter provides an update on the benefits of n-3 fatty acids on reproduction in the pig. The second describes novel techniques for producing plants that can replace fish oil in aquaculture feeds. The third reviews use of fermented feeds for pigs. The fourth looks at developments in pig genetics and forecasts what type of pigs will be produced in 2025. The final chapter provides an overview of trends and opportunities in the pig feed market and supply trade.

All chapters are written by international experts and provide comprehensive analyses of issues alongside practical applications. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in the livestock industry, including nutritionists, feed suppliers, researchers, consultants, animal science students, legislators and veterinary practitioners.
