About this book

Language: French

The second volume of the Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in 1771, deals with pigeons and doves, barnyard species (including roosters and turkeys) and more generally all gallinaceans, although Buffon, faithful to his anti-Linnean principles, refuses to give these birds a generic name. A large part of the chapters is the work of his collaborator, Guéneau de Montbeillard, whose role, however, is not yet officially recognized. But Guéneau imitated the Buffon style so well that the public will believe they recognize in his evocation of the peacock one of the finest examples of the naturalist's style.

In addition to the quality of the descriptions and the richness of the illustrations, this volume offers new reflections, in particular, on hybridization and the origin of domestic forms, and several exotic species are described there for the first time.
