About this book

Language: French

In the fourth volume of the Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in 1778, Buffon and Guéneau de Montbeillard share between them the description of the various species, as they did in previous volumes. This is also the first volume for which Buffon was able to benefit from the assistance of a new collaborator, Abbé Bexon, who wrote the first drafts of certain articles. Buffon nevertheless remains the principal architect, reserving the finest pieces for himself, such as the chapters on canaries, in which he dwells on the questions of hybridization that fascinate him, as they are crucial to the definition of the concept of species.

This volume deals primarily with the remainder of the "small birds," such as linnets, Bengalis, finches, goldfinches, buntings, and bullfinches, as well as numerous exotic species (tanagers, manakins, cotingas), some of which are described for the first time.
