About this book

Language: French

With the sixth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, originally published in 1756, the series of domestic quadrupeds comes to an end: the cat, the most unruly of them, "unfaithful servant", forms the transition, in a way, with the following series, that of the wild animals of France. Buffon, faithful to the principles set out in the First Discourse of 1749, begins by dealing with the species most useful to man, that is to say, from the point of view of a great lord of the 18th century, the animals that we hunt. Five of them appear in this volume: stag, fallow deer, roe deer, hare and rabbit. Each offers an opportunity for the writer to seduce a wide audience by quality of style, and for the scholar and philosopher to elevate the spirit from the collection of facts to general reflections on nature. The accuracy of Daubenton's descriptions and the richness of the illustration testify on their side to the double purpose of the enterprise, pleasure and instruction.
