About this book

Language: Spanish

This volume in the series Fauna Ibérica is dedicated to the twelve families of the order Pantopoda (Acheliidae, Aschorhynchidae, Tanystylidae, Nymphonidae, Callipallenidae, Pallenopseidae, Phoxichilidiidae, Endeididae, Colossendeidae, Austrodecidae, Rhynchothoracidae, and Pycnogonidae) that make up the picnogonid fauna of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic islands. The volume begins with a comprehensive and updated overview of the general characteristics of the group. Next, the authors have made an effort to condense the most relevant information for each species and the biological details that relate specifically to the Ibero-Balearic region: taxonomic position, biogeographical distribution globally and at Iberian level, reproductive biology and food if known, ecology, etc. All information is documented by providing an extensive bibliography. The descriptions, illustrations, and dichotomous keys help correct identification. For this purpose the volume also includes a booklet of color photographs devoted mostly to adults of the main Ibero-Balearic species. The final part of the text that contains a wide and thorough updating of nomenclature of taxa represented in the study area was conducted by Miguel Angel Alonso-Zaragoza; compilation was particularly complex given the profusion of names throughout history that have been applied to some of the taxa treated.
